If you want to disavow backlinks, the good news is that it’s really easy. What you need to do is find your backlinks in Google and click on them one by one, then select the option to “disavow” or “reject”. You’ll see how many links you already disavowed at the bottom of this article. The main thing you’ll want to keep in mind is that you need a contextual backlinks expert to help you separate the good from the bad.

The only other thing I’ll suggest is that you give this a decent amount of time (a week or two?) before making a decision about how valuable that link actually was to your business. Do some research online and decide how important that website truly is for your site. If it looks like you might have done some form of work with them and they are providing an actual service, reconsider before disavowing their links.

Step 3: Remove the Disavow Links from Your Google Webmaster Tools Account
Don’t forget that you have a new section under “Acquisition” in your Google Webmaster Tools called “Disavowed Links”. If you try and remove them through GWT after disavowing through MOZ, they will remain on GWT. You can only remove them one at a time by clicking on each link individually.
I also recommend clearing out your GWT account if you haven’t already. It’s likely filled with spammy links as well so make sure you comb over those settings and options thoroughly.
Step 4: Use a link finding tool
The next thing I recommend doing is using a link finding tool to check your new GWT disavowed links report to make sure you got everything covered.
It’s possible that some of the links were on sites related to yours but not actually linking directly to your site. Google may have determined these as “low quality connections,” or they could be old, or any number of other reasons…or maybe the backlink was more indirect and you missed it during Step 2 of this process. Whatever the case, running a link audit will help account for anything Google didn’t catch in their initial scan.

Also make sure you check the Google Search Console – Disavow Links report (mentioned above) as well. Sometimes Google lets through a link you don’t want to be associated with your site. It’s very easy to do this in GSC, and they’ll even let you know how many links need to be removed. In some cases these were actually links that pointed at my site, but I wasn’t aware of them and hadn’t requested them.
This is also an effective way to get rid of any spammy footer or sidebar links that slip onto your site without your knowing about it (or asking for it).
